Barcelona establishes itself as a sustainable tourism destination
The city revalidates its Biosphere certification until 2024

Barcelona is establishing itself as a Biosphere destination: a certification based on an audit of tourism management as an environmentally, economically, culturally and socially sustainable activity. The city council renewed its certification, which recognises the city’s endeavours to offer quality standards as part of its tourism offer and the proper management of this activity.
The city is working to ensure that the certification is awarded to the greatest number of businesses and organisations in the tourism sector as possible, through the Destination Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism: a distinction funded by the tourist tax and promoted by Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with the Turisme de Barcelona Consortium and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce. It recognises businesses working in the tourism sector that are committed to responsible management and respect the environment, culture, working conditions, gender equality and social and economic returns.
The Destination Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism is awarded under the Biosphere umbrella, bearing in mind Barcelona’s condition as a certified destination, and, therefore, with the ability to award the distinction of committed entity.
