Turisme de Barcelona has presented the Commitment to Tourism Sustainability Barcelona Biosphere which establishes the criteria and procedures for tour operators to obtain their access to the city's Biosphere certification.

This year 2019, we have to begin implementing the Biosphere project in order to stimulate and promote commitment to sustainability amongst companies. The implementation of this initiative, led by the Barcelona City Council through Barcelona Tourism and in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, has as its main objective the companies that are members of the Consortium.

For this process to develop successfully, some requirements and guidelines have been defined to help companies and services on their path to sustainability, considering some factors such as social, work, cultural and economic on which they have some influence. Each Company will have a guideline depending on their activity and will receive training and help throughout the process.

Travel agents, accommodation, commerce, event organizers MICE, museums, tourism information offices, restaurants, public transport and professional associations are some of the sectors that can be included in this project. The seal for Best Practice is voluntary and proactive, and is achieved under the supervision of an external organism: the Institute for Responsible Tourism and its costs are covered via the tourist tax without any expense for the operator.
