The General Council, chaired by the mayor of Barcelona, is the foremost representative of Turisme de Barcelona. It comprises three vice-presidents and 26 members. The Executive Committee is the permanent governing and administrative body. It is chaired by a member of the Chamber of Commerce appointed by its president, and also has two vice-presidents.
Turisme de Barcelona has two participating institutions: the Municipal Council and the Chamber of Commerce. Nevertheless, its budget is not solely reliant on the contributions from these organisations.
Turisme de Barcelona was founded in 1993. Its initial objectives were threefold: 1) to consolidate the number of tourists already visiting the city; 2) to attract new visitors; and 3) to make cost-effective Barcelona's range of shops and services. Over two decades later, Barcelona has firmly established itself as one of the world’s key urban tourism destinations, the Consortium has set its sights on new horizons.
